THE LOCARNO CONFERENCE:
Locarno, October 7. A substantial part of the western security pact has been com pleted and it is expected that the jurists will add the Anlsking touches to-day, but the glass is not yet so fair in regard to other subjects to be considered and it must "Hot" be forgotten, that all questions are Inter-dependent-Reuter
Paris, October 7. Newspaper despatches from Locarno foreshadow a tug-of-war with the German representatives, particularly on the question of the Eastern pact.
"
?
The Echo de Paris says that the optimismi with which the con ference opened has been replaced by greater reserve. It adds that it is beginning to be realised that the Germans will play an extremely keen kame, and Poland and Czechoslovakia are apprehensive on that score and that France will not desert them.t
L'Ere Nouvelle says that the shadow of Russia dominates Locarno. The question is whether Germany is looking west or east. "According as this question is answered affirmatively or negatively the Locarno pourparlers signify the commencement of the reconstruc- tion of Europe or the inauguration of a dubious situation, heavy with peril for the Allies."
Le Journal's correspondent says that French clreles in Locarno declare it to be inadmissible that the proposed pact will suppress or werken existing trentics, Should Germany try to go back on the engage- ments into which she entered, in the course of the negotiations before the conference, the responsibility will rest entirely with her.-Router.

Sub-Inspector A. J. Dorling gave evidence of arrest of the defendant, who was at the time engaged in the General Post Office, as a postal
censor.
On the interpreter entering the box to give evidence of a statement made by the defendant in noswer to the original charge, Mr F. C. Jenkin; for the defence, objected to the admission of the document," on the grounds that the charge was not, the same as that on which the defendant was being tried before the Magistrate. It was further faulty in that the dates were correct, and the number of shares in respect of the China Light and Power Co., was also orroneous, very important discrepancy was the omission of the words "with intent to defraud." The lact that part of the charge was erroneous rendered the whole charge faulty."
