and rich historical associations. ettected

From the economic viewpoint, the lake is of, little importance. Its chief products are the loaves, saeds, and roots of the lotus plant, certain. kinds of edible water plants and fish. The yearly pros- ceeds from the lake used to amount to between $60,000 and $70,000 in the late Ching Dynasty, but the amount has fallen far short of this figure lately owing to lack of improvements. lake was formerly under the con- trol of a commission appointed by the Nanking authorities but is now farmad out to private persons at a yearly rent fixed by public tander.. This has been chiefly responsible for the decrease in the lake's products. The private farmers, after having paid the yearly rent to the officials, pocket almost all the profits, scarcely making any improvement on the lake, with the result that part of the lake hitherto planted with: lotus is now "given, over to the growth of reeds and rushes. The fishery products have also been grently reduced. Instead of using nets, fishing is carried on by draining off the water in the lake.... and picking up all the fish of whatever size: no consideration being given to the future.
