THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
Geneva, September 7.
A festive, appearance characterises the city on the occasion of the opening of the sixth Assembly of the League of Nations. Hotels, are crowded and flags of all nations are fluttering in the brilliant sun- shine. Trains are arriving packed with delegates and sightseers. The approaches to the Assembly Hall are thronged and, the galleries then- selves packed.

M. Painleve in his presidential address solemnly affirmed France's respect for the League and hér unreserved acceptance of the principle [of arbitration. He foreshadowed the continuation of the discussions. on arbitration, security and disarmament.---a policy which could only bo carried out in the course of time by patient and constant endëa-

He tributed America's undBelal co-operation with the League and hoped to see Germany join. He concluded amid cheers expressing the opinion that nothing should discourage the efforts for peace. The words hope, venture, and persevere should hover over the proceedings

Caillaux in a speech at the regional meeting, making, allusion to the debts question, said it was impossible to ask the country for greater contributions than they receive from their enemies especially as contributions had to be used for the rebuilding of the wasted regions and not for debts payments.-—Havas.

ALLEGED FRAUD.

At the Central Magistracy yes- terday afternoon, a fokt, employed at the Tai Lee Chan.of No. 89, Jervois Street, was charged on three counts of obtaining goods by false pretences, On each countl he was alternatively charged with fraudulently converting the goods}" to his own use..
Mr. Andrewes, of Messrs. Dea- cons, represented the complainant, the managing partner, and Mr. M. K. Lo appeared, for, the defen- dunt.
Opening his case, Mr. Andrewes, said that the complainant'a firm carried on business as hardware dealers. It was the usual custom pf the firm to supply clients with, goods should there be the requir- ed stocks in the shop. If the firm had not the goods in stock a fokiļ was sent to purchase the goods elsewhere.. The defendant had been sent on numerous occasions, but on the occasion of the alleged "offence he had not been authorised to purchase any goods but he had gone to the Wing Lee firm and purchased a quantity of saw files and blades on behalf of his firm.
Accounts wore subsequently rendered by the Wing Lee firm and when the Taf Lee Char received their bills at the end of the month they were unable to account for certain goods for which they were debited by the Wing Lee.,
The various fokis of the Tai Lee Chan were questioned as re- gards "these goods but all denied any knowledge of the items. The defendant was finally suspected and when asked, refused to pre-1 sent himself at the Wing Lee for identification.
The complainant bore out the opening after which Mr. Lo puti his client into the box. The de- fendant admitted the purchase of the goods bul stated that he hand- ed them to the accauntent.
After both solicitors had ad- dressed the Bench, his Worship Mr. S. B. B. McElderry reserved. judgment.
Although his plane landed up- side down, J. F. Doran-Wobb, the pilot, escaped serious injury, by leaping just before the plane hit the ground, at Folkestone,
