RIFFIAN REFUGES CLEANED OUT..
MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 1925.
Fez, Aug. 16. The general situation is calm along the whole front. The French roops in the region of Weżzan. penetrated to the very "core of the strongly fortified Jebel Sarsar and, reached the most distant refuges of the Riffians, cleaned the whole region and settled organizations for permanent defence connected with the Spanish front, in order to pre- vent further incur fons. Sarsar's defenders fled before showers of bombs and shells from French and Spanish aeroplanes and guns. The loyal tribes have been reassured and have, reoccupied their villages. A number of dissident tribes are making submission to the French authorities.-Router.

Le Journal publishes a despatched from Madrid stating that all preparations are now completed for the Spanish landing at Alhucemas which was definitely fixed for the 24th. Forty thousand reinforce- ments will be despatched to undertake the operation.-Reuter.

The Air Ministry announces that arrangements for opening the elvil air service between Egypt and India have progressed to the extent that provisional heads, of agreement have been concluded between the Air Ministry and the Imperial Airways Limited. for the operation of a weekly service in each direction between Kantara and Karachi, The maximum annual subsidy is to be £87,000.-Reuter..

SOCIALIST CONGRESS BAN.

The National Socialist Congress has rejected a motion by M. Renaudel calling on M. Varenne to choose between the Governorship of Indo-China and the Socialist deputyship.
The Congress adopted a countermotion by M. Lebas by 2,095 votes to 381 declaring that M. Varenne has placed himself outside the party. -Router.
