Existing taxi-cab owners and drivora are up in arms against the proposal that smaller type of taxi- cab shall be licensod in Loudon Ito ply at cheaper rates than the fourseator cabs. Paris has had for some timo a taxi-cab to carry only one passenger and it has provod popular, Birkenhead has introducad the two-seator taxi- cab, but a letter has been receiv od from the Soorotary of the Liverpool distriot branch of the Motor-Cab Trade Protection Bociety in which it was declared that troub'o quickly-rosulted and that the drivers of two-soaters were now being ostracised. The cise against the two-seater cabs ¿was put 'y a representative of the present owners as follows:----
It would be disastrous to havo" two soles of charges in London. The bulk of the cab-riding public do not object to our tariff, and the majority admit that we are the most efficient and speady section of the London traffic. The suggested change would simply make chaos of the ranking ayatom. I can foresoo endless trouble. If the drivor of a two- saator takes more than two passengers, you will find other. cabmen taking proceedings. The reduction of tariffe would bring us to the earnings of a taxi-driver to the prewar rate of 78. a day. It would, in fact, bring us to the coolio level.
.
Another official stated that the cabs affected raprosented a capi- tal of over three million pounds.

BATIK DYEING.
An Overworked Process.
This process, which originated in the East many centuries ago, has recently bocomo pepular and, has been taken up, and perhapa rather overdone, by the art studente in Paris.
All that is required for batik | dyeing at home is wax and a tool of some sort for outlining the dosign. Thero is a special toól! made for this purpose, which is the best to use, but it is not absolutely necessary. The wax is melted and spread evenly on the surface of the matorial with a brush. Tho design is then out- lined with a sharp instrument, and the whole immersed in the dye' bath. The featura of butik dyeing is the curious offect produced by the dye penetrating through cracks in the wax. Ordinary household dyes may be usod, but there are special colours made for batik work...
In fact, everything required for the process, from a pan for: melting tho wax to rubbor gloves to protect the hands |from dys, may be bought. Thore sro, too, a number of textbooks on the subject, most of which contain illustrations of, dosigne. Anyone interested may easily experiment with Q piece of benswax and a packet of dye....
