W. Nunn, lato Advisor to tho Siamese Government on Custóma and Exolso, which was dolivorod the other day before the Royal Society of Arts, was very wol- come.

Mr. Nunn had much to say of the potentialities of Siam as a customer for foreign goods and of the many avenues of devolop- mant open in Sism in which foreign capital could find a use. Not so welcome, however, were views expressed by the lecturer in reply to the discussion which followed the reading of the paper. He remarked that ho felt that the British people had to keep their oyes opon for the future of their trado interests in Siam, That was hot so with regard to certain other European races, and he felt that if this country's

business interests in Siam were

to be maintained our young bus-, iness men would have to take more interest in their work and alter their present somewhat happy-go-lucky methods...

Therewas a certain danger from American competition. A large number of young Siamese were now being sent to the United States for training, and they came back with American' ideas, and, naturally, when they had any- thing to do later on with business affairs, their sympathies would be more American than British. American interests were gaining . ground. The American motor car, for instance, very largoly outnumbered the British: In tin-mining machinery the Amor- icans were beating us. Generally speaking, he felt that the British commercial prospects in Siam- were not quite so bright as they were a few years ago...

Apropos Mr. Nunn's remarks. upon the representation of British business houses in Siam, it is deplorable if, as he suggests, tho younger generation of British business men in Slam are devot- ing more time to pleasure than to business, and put such pastimes as tonnis before the acquisition of orders for the louises they represent, says the China Fx- We hope that, while press. keeping themselvos fit; they also: see to it that the Old Country is keeping pace with her com- petitors in the growing Siamese market. Incidentally, it may be said there is a feeling in Bangkok that British manufacturers would prevent undercutting and over- stocking if they appointed sole agencies.

It is an idea that has already been of value ölsewhere, and is worth consideration in regard to Siam.
