The Chairman: The first item is for the telephone cable to d'Aguilar Wireless Station. The original estimate for the cost of the cable was $61,500; the actual cost was $83,600, a difference of $22,000. The cost of laying the cable will, however, be somewhat leas than the estimate about $4,000 less, and the deficit in therefore $18,000.

Hon. Mr. Holyoak: What the explanation of the increase in the cost of the cable?.

The Chairman: When the indent is sent Home it is im- possible to estimate exactly what the cost of the cable will be.

Hon. Mr. Lang: It depends on the price of copper.

The Chairman: We put a sum in the estimates and made out the indent of what we thought the cost would be. When the Crown Agents come to place the tender, the cost is found to be so much more. There is also the cost of copper. The same remarks apply to the second item-telephone cable between Kowloon and Taipe and Fanling. The cost of the cable was estimated at $20,900, but there has been a saving in the enst of laying the cable which has reduced the deficit to $16,000.

The Chairman: It is a Gov- ernment telephone cable.

Hon. Mr. Alabaster: Will the cable to Taipo be duplicated under the new scheme.

The Chairman: This is for Government quarters, police stations, and so on.

Hon. Mr. Lang: Will it be pos- sible, to run these telephones through the new telephone com- pany? Can some arrangements

be made?

The Chairman: I do not think it will be possible to get rid of our Government exchange. It has certain advantages,

Hon. Mr. Lang: It would result in a great saving, and I should imagine we could come to some arrangement which would obviate the laying of two lots of cables.
