£750,000 PLAYGROUND.
Rothschild Home at Gunnersbury,
Gunnarabury Park, the beauti ful West London estate of Mrs. Leopold de Rothschild, "may be acquired for the public, to be laid out as pleasure gardens and a sports ground, says a Home paper, Nogotiations for its purchase have been going on for two or three months between the town councils of Ealing and Acton and the Rothschild family, and a joint meeting of the councils will be held on Monday to discuss the purchase price..
This, it is stated, will be in the neighbourhood of £750,000, pay- ment being spread over a long period of years.
Nearly as large as Kensington Gardens, Gunnersbury Park con- tains two mansion houses, lodges, farm buildings, a pavilion, a polo field, throo small lakes, a swim- ming bath, and large gardens. The decision to sell the estate was made last autumn.
GARDENS AND SPORTS GROUNDS.
There is room for pleasure gardens, a nine-hole municipal golf course, football and cricket grounds, tennis courts, swimming: baths and playgrounds for chil- dron.
Gunnersbury Park has been in the possession of the Rothschilds since the middle of last century, and King Edward used to be a frequent visitor there. The house is in the Italian stylo, and the gardens, among the finest ox- amples of landscape gardening in the country, have attracted thou- sands of visitors,
Gunnersbury is a place of some antiquity, but little is known of its early history. The name is supposed to bo derived from Gunilda, a niece of King Canuto. Date. Sun., 17 inat., 8.30 à.m. In the 15th century the ostato ...Sun. 17 inst., 8.30a.m. belonged to Sir Thomas Frowick,
