OBITUARY.

London, May 14, The death is announced of Professor Joseph Henry Longford. Router.

[Professor Longford was Emeritus Professor of JapanesQE AS. King's Colloge, London, and vice-president of the Japan Boclety of London. He was born June 25, 1849. In 1869 he entered the British consular service in Japan na student interpreter, serving for 85 years and travelling, during that time, through the entire Japanese empira. He was a prolific writer of things Japanese, his first book being the penal code of the country published in 1877.3
