BRITISH SILK TAX.
Rome, May 4. After private meetings of Italian silk manufacturers at Milan and Como in connection with Britain's proposed silk duties, the delegates have arrived at Rome to confer with the Government with the view to the latter, approaching the British Government before the law is enacted. The manufacturers point out that the proposed duties will strike heavily the Italian-Industry and also cause a grave reper- cussion in the London market itself, which hitherto has held the privileged position of the world's silk market-Reuter.
French Attitude.
Taris, May 4 The Silk Manufacturers Association of Lyons is urging M. Briand to intervene with. Mr. Churchill in regard to the silk duty. In the course of its protest it points out that export sales to Britain last year totalled 1,500,000,000 francs, equivalent to 20 percent of the whole of the French exports to Britain.
+
It suggests that Britain ought not to hasten the settlement of the French debt by affecting France's, economic life
A writer in Figure argues that London is no less a transit market for manufactured articles than a consuming market. It says that M! Churchill's scheme protects the latter but leaves the former free. The writer suggests that the role of forwarding agent for manufac tured articles be transferred to Marseilles and Bordeaux, or even Antwerp or Hamburg-Reuter,
· FRANCE'S MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
Paris, May 4.
The al results of the municipal elections are not expected to-night but the fact emerges that the left cartel have gained ad- vantages while the communists, have suffered severe setback Sedond polls will be necessary in a number of cases.
The only disturbing incident occurred at Corsica where shots were fired inside the polling station, two persons being killed and three injured,Renter,
Paris, May 4,
The municipal elections show that no change has taken place in Paris. Forty-eight definite results are recorded and 31 second ballots will be required.
In the departments numerous results are yet unknown, and a number of second ballots will take place, but so far far it looks as though the left block, has made light progress:
In Lyons, M. Herriot, the mayor, was re-elected with 28 left blockists and 28 second ballots" required.
In Marseilles 28 left blockists were elected with eight second ballots required. In Bordeaux 23 left blockists elected and thirteen second ballots needed.
Several great towns show no definite results. In Metz. and Rouen no left blockists were elected. Everywhere the communists suffered severe losses.-Havas.
THE PRINCE'S TOUR.
Capetown, May 4.
At the dinner to the Prince of Wales, Mr. Hertzog warmly ap- plauded the speech supporting the toast to His Royal Highness. He said the Prince would be, welcomed equally and sincerely on the lovely plains of the Free State, and the high veldt of the Transyaal General Smuts said the South Africans loved the Prince's simplicity, human ways and sincerity. The people were deeply attached to him. as heir apparent to the throne.--Reuter.

A message from Rome says it is believed the ex-Crown Prince of Germany paid a mysterious visit to Arezzo in Tuscany at a critical period of the Presidential election in Germany, with which some connect the visit in view of the Catholic influence on the votes of the German Centre Party. Others express the opinion that the ex-Prince was concerned with the purchase of properly.-Reuter,
