THE BUDGET.
London, April 30. Mr. Snowdon's concluding thrust in the House of Commons yesterday was that Mr. Churchill would go down to posterity as the Chancellor who taxed silk stockings...
The President of the Silk Association is of the opinion that the prosent proposals afford very little protection for the English manu- facturer.
The Daily Mail, in a leader, declares that the advantage Mr. Churchill will give to the lime artificial silk industry is much too small to compensate for the difficulties, expenses and delays of excise supervision. It says that artificial silk will be one of the greatest textile materials of the future. Even before this blow, with the exception of one firm, the industry was not progressing as fast as certain Continental competing, countrica.—Renter.

The Governor-General, the Earl of Athlone and Princess Alice boarded the Repulse at ten this morning.. and an hour later the Prince of Wales lauded from the pinnace and was welcomed by Premier Hertzog and members of the cabinet, the Speaker and the President of the Senate, the Archbishop of South Africa, General Smuts and Sir Thomas Smartt.
