SHIPMASTER'S DEATH.

FOUND SHOT IN HIS CABIN.

Information was received bý Messrs. Butterfield and Swire early. yesterday morning, of the death of Sui Yang, which occurred on board Captain Dillon, of the C. N. Co's 8.5, that vessel while at Canton "on Wednesday afternoon.

The body of the unfortunate officer was discovered in the saloon at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the cause of death being a gunshot wound In the neck. So far as can be ascertained, there is no reason to' suppose that the case is one of sulcide. An inquest will shortly be held, and until such time as the Anding is made.public, no opinion on the matter can be expressed.

The funeral was held at Canton! yesterday and was attended by officers of all British ships in harbour. All ships in the owner- ahip. of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire in Hongkong' were flying flags at half-mast yesterday. The sympathy of the community is extended to the wife and relatives of Captain Dillon, who was one of the most popular officers in the service of the China Navigation Co. A native of Plymouth, he had been in the service of the Company for 22 years, and had made his home in Shanghai.
