"The number confirmed have been- as follows:-1922, 183 (77 mon & 106 women); 1923, 200 (92. men & 108 women); 1924, 98 (30 men & 68 women); (In 1924. the Bishop was absent on leave for nine months); 1925, 125 (45 men & 80 women); during, the four past months.

There are two notes on which I would' close. The one is the need for instruction; the other is the need for holiness of life. First there is the need for learn- ing, both among us clergy and also amongst our Church mem- bers.

A great English Bishop used to say do his clergy: "If you do

become not read, you will burden to the Church in thirteen years," and I am sure this is true of every Church. Every year the Victoria Diocesan Association has. given at Christmas time a gift of books to workers. I would like to receive suggestions from the clergy as to how best we", may further study amongst ourselves. Pastoral lectures and Study Circles have been suggested to me, and I think both are good.

I would like to say here that I was glad that two of our clergy, the Rev. P. Jenkins and Wong Tung-ig, were selected by the British & Foreign Bible Society or the important work of revis ing the New Testament in Canton- ese colloquial. I understand that the revised version will be pub lished shortly...

And amongst our Church people I hope everything possible will be done to foster among those who come for Baptism the regular reading of the Bible, along the lines of the Scripture Union for instance, or whatever means may best approve itself.....

I would also like to gress the need for the most thorough possible preparation of these who would are to be confirmed, I always incline to err on the side of aver preparation rather than the reverse. And I think it is a dishonour to our Church when candidates are presented to the Bishop inefficiently prepared. Confirmation time affords unique opportunity for instruc- tion in the principles of Christianity. The opportunity should be used to the full.

In some dioceses, there is a Canon Missioner whose office is, by God's grace, to deepen spiritual life among workers and church members by the holding of retreats and other methods. I wish more could be done in this way in this Diocese. I hope that jmore may be done. Our work is to be tried by fire and the one thing that can as a last resort stand that test is holiness. There are no short cals. The" church that would be holy must pay the price. Above all we must be spiritual.

TOKYO'S TEMPLES.

If a government proposal goes through Tokyo will be stripped of about half of its temples under the reconstruction scheme. It le planned to expropriate about ten per cent. of the premises of the 500 odd temples destroyed in the great disaster and allot them an equivalent in the suburbs. It is understood that the temple authorities vory generally will olect' to move to the suburba where thay can have the spacious grounds to which they have been accustomed rather than robuild on restricted sites. The expro- priated land is to be used in widening and cutting in new streets.
