Softa, April 26.
A painful Impression was caused by the statement alleged to have been made, to foreign press representatives by the British labourite members of the House of Commons, Messrs. Wedgwood, Mackinder and Lestrange Malone who spent a few days here after the explosion at the, cathedral. A. semi-official statement declares that their state- ments were exaggerated and erroneous. The number arrested all over the country was two thousand, not six thousand. Those arrested were directly implicated in communist activities or suspected of participation.
"
The number killed was not hundreds but only a few who refused to surrender. It is alleged that the mentioned commoners were. displeased because there were not allowed to interview the imprisoned leaders of the conspiracy....
The agrarian leaders have been released as it has been established that they were not implicated in the communist conspiracy. ..Dout hundred others were also released.-Reuter.
ENGINEERING INDUSTRY TROUBLES.
London, April 25,
While employers and trade unions in the shipbuilding industry havo agreed to begin a joint enquiry into the serious plight of shipbuilding, a less conciliatory spirit marks the engineering industry, whose troubles are equally serious. The executives of forty engineering trade unions assembled in London to consider the position as regards their demand for an increase in wages of twenty shillings weekly, which the employers have already refused, were astonished to receive a communication from the Employers'. Federation declaring the position and prospects of the, industry had worsened as the result of foreign competition. A drastic remedy was essential. Therefore they were proposing to increase the weekly hours from forty-seven to fifty for day time, and fifty- two and a half for night time, with modification of overtime rates. The Jetter suggested the employers' unions will jointly urge the Government to approach Continental competitor nations with the view to some arrangement under a Treaty to secure better working conditions on the Continent. This has greatly disturbed labour trade union opinion, which believes the attitude of the engineering employers foreshadows a general movement for longer hours.- Reuter.
ANZAC DAY,
London; April 25.. Remarkable scenes were witnessed at the Cenotaph. The High Commissioners had to struggle in the vast crowd in order to place wreaths on the occasion of Anzac Day.
Thousands of men and women from Yorkshire and Wales: who had arrived to attend the Cup final, wearing football colours, and who were ranged on both sides of the road, all reverent and quiet, contrasting with the previous hilarity and excitement of journeying through the streets in charabanes or afoot, daffed weirdly coloured kats.
The sudden silence, the conse fire of the rattles and the hushing of clamorous voices was more impressive than ал organised demonstration of respect. The crowd waited all, the morning. Bunches of flowers, including scores of button holes were, plucked impulsively from the lapeis of wearers and laid at the foot of the Cenotaph.-Reuter.
HINDENBURG'S CANDIDATURE.
"Cologne, 'April 25.
Field Marshal Hindenburg's candidature is being keenly pushed in the Rhineland stronghold of the Contre party. A "Pfennige" fund for his election" expenses is being strongly supported: speeches, pamphlets and leaflets on his behalf show a'atrong contrast to the comparative inactivity of the Marxites. A six per cent. turnover of votes will mean the election of Hindenburg-Reuter..
