the

Washington, March 25. Indian authorities A report of the refusal of grant a permit to the big game expedition led by Theodore and Kormit Roosevelt to use the Hunza Pass to onter Turkestan has re- ulted in a numbor of letters roaching the British Embassy accusing ho British Government and in one case the Ambassader, Sir Esme Howard personally, with wilfully preventing the passage of the expedition.

Embassy oflicials have expressed their regret at this misconcep

that A large tion, explaining that the cause of the refusal was Swedish expedition had used the pass this year and had employed that under-manned or all available nalive bearers. It added

in 11 wild inefficiently manned éxpeditions would be dangerous country where food and facilities were very scarce.

The refusal of the Indian authorities was due to the fact that they felt morally responsible for the expedition' passing through India into more or less unknown lands beyond. It is understood that the Roosevelts have been advised that they may enter Turkestan by some other pass or postpone their trip for a year.-Renter's American Service.

THE COTTON INDUSTRY.

London, March 25,

com-

A series of conferences being held in Lancashire, reflect determined move to infuse life into the cotton industry. "Certain of n joint conference proposals" were discussed yesterday at spinning and weaving employers, and what was described as prehensive proposals, drafted by the Master Spinners' Federation, will be discussed next week, by a joint conference of workers and employers. Little is at present known regarding the nature of the propo-als beyond the statement that the industry is considering the production of cheaper materials from a low grade colton, and also that a tendency has been revealed to abandon curtailment of production in favour of increasing the output and thus cut down overhead costs and reduce prices.-Reuter.

AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.
