THE FUTURE OF OIL *FUEL.
BRITISH OPTIMISM.
The occasional foars expressad in the United States that tho near futuro will noe an off famino do not seem to bo takon at all seriously among the exporta in England. The reason for the optimistie outlook of British enginoore in that they do not look to petroleum alone for the supply of motor oils and fuels, but to auch native substancos as: oil shalos, lignites, pant and ordinary coal.
Professor. A. W. Nash. of the oil mining department of the Birm- ingham University, says oven all all the free oilfields of the world have not been completely ex- plored. Many are still undis- covered and untouched ovon in the United Statos. He maintains that the presont carofres method of working the fiolds may lanvo more fuel in the ground than is obtained for the world's markote, and that botter and moro scientific production methods would probably koop those fields up for many years to come.
Oil shale fiolds are plentiful in practically all sections of the. world. The 30,000,000 tons of small coal that constitute wasto or are left underground, could also yield a hugo quantity of oil annually by the Burgius hydrogenation process which has boon undergoing experimention at the Birmingham University.
In Sweden charcoal has boon undergoing toats for tho pro- duction of fuel for motor ear oil burning locomotives, and it is firmly believed by those making the experiments that oil from charcoal would reduce expenses by fifty por cent."
COMPULSORY INSURANCE.
WHY THE AMERICAN A‚A. OPPOSES IT.
Washington, Feb. 10th---Follow- ing are the reasons given by tho American Automobile Associa- tion for opposing the onsetmont of a compulsory insurance law for motorista :
01
1. The weight of informed opinion in overwhelmingly the side of those who contond that compulsory insurance would not prevent accidents.
"2, Adoption of the principle would be a first step leading to state insurance.
"3. As a safety measuro compulsory insurance was voted down by the Hoover Conferenco on Street and High Safety.
"4. Insurance experta elaim it) will tend to increase accidents, promote devolopment of irres- ponsible companies and multiply frivolous and excessive claims, ) all of which would result in advance of insurance rato",
5. It is impossible to aucer- tain how many owners and drivers of automobilos ara irres- ponsible or what the amount of uncompensated damages aro. But the toll that compulsory insur- ance would lovy on all motorists is out of all proportion to uncom pensated JoeSOR, To guarantee this loss something like $50,000,- 000, a compulsory insurance schome would make the motorists of the country pay additional in- suraneo amounting to something liko $547,200,000.
"6. A fow careless drivers, probable loss than 5 per cent. of those who use the roads, are re-i sponsible for the great majority; of accidents. Compulsory Insur- ance would ponalize all motorists becauso of this small minority."
WATCH THE CHARGE,
If the storage battery in charged int home, watch it carefully in ropard to undue hosting. If tho battery geta hot, disconnect it from the charging unit, as it is then being charged too rapidly, Reduce the charging rate. If the charger has a fixed charging rate,) write to the manufacturor and find out how to reduce this rato.
A TEST FOR CARBON. Tho prosence of free carbon in oil can be detected by what is known as the blotter test. A drop of oil is put on clean, white blotter. If the drop disappears, overnight and does not leave a dark-coloured stain, it indloatos to a cortain degree that there is little free carbon in the oll. If, however, a stain is loft, it; Indicates that there is a cortain amount of free carbon in the oil whleb, in all probability, will bo deposited in the combustion ohamber.
