CARGO STEAMER ASHORE.

Amsterdam, March 9.. Rotterdamsche Lloyd, reports that the cargo steamer Scorakarta in ashore off the north pier at the Hook of Holland, in a heavy sea with a strong wind, and in a, dangerous position. Two lifebbekn have attempted to reach the ship but one ran aground and probably capsized. It is feared that her crew was drowned. The other bont returned as she was unable to reach the verael-Renter

The Soerakarta from Hamburg to Java is still stranded off the north pier and is overheeling to port. The crew refused to leave the vessel A tugboat which went to the rescue of the vessel was stranded off the south pier. The quests at a banquet to celebrate the opening of the Lyons Fair included M. Novak, the Czechoslovak Minister and M. Krasain. M. Herriot speaking unofficially as mayor of Lyons said in M. Krassin, he greeted the noble and brave people of Russia. France's was threatened with gratitude was due to men who, when Paris envelopment in 1914, threw themselves upon a common enemy and died bravely.

When he was in Russia where he was kindly received, he made a point of laying flowers on the graves of these soldiers. He con- cluded saying that such memories were shared in common and created between the two great nations bonds which nothing could Joo-e-Reuter.

LORD CURZON'S OPERATION.

London. March 9.

The following bulletin has been issued from Lord Curzon's London residence: "Lord Curzon underwent a severe operation this morning. The patient is as well as can be expected at this early stage, but his condition must call for great anxiety within a days."-Reuter.

With reference to Lord Curzon's operation, Lord Curzon fainted on the 6th inst., while dressing for dinner. He was found suffer- ing from haemorrhage necessitating an operation.-Reuter-

ANTI-SOVIET PLOT.

Helsinfors, March 9.

It is reported that over thirty persons have been arrested in Leningrad on the charge of a serious conspiracy against the Soviet. Most of those arrested are said to be ex-teachers or pupils of the once well-known "Alexander gymnasium," which daring the old regime supplied the diplomatic service of Russia with officials.

Those arrested are said to include the last director of the school, the historian Schilder Schulder, Prince Golitzin and Baron Von der Ostensasken.-Reuter.

WOOLWICH ARSENAL FIRE.

London, March 9.

Contrary to wireless reports the fire at the Woolwich Arsenal which broke gul on the 3rd inst. was not serious. It broke out in the workshop and spread to the Antigas factory.

The fire-engines confined the blaze to the relatively unimportant baldings. It is officially stated that three buildings comprising the tailors and saddlers shops and stores were badly damaged. There were no casualties.-Kenter.

SOUTH AMERICAN AGREEMENT.
