THE RETURN TO GOLD STANDARD.

London, February 8.

In an article in the Observer favouring the return to the gold standard, Mr. Philip Snowden, the ex-Chancellor, says that it seems not improbable that the present margin of needed recovery to bring sterling to parity with the gold dollar will be covered without deliberate Government interference, but there will not be stability In the recovery without the fulfilment of three conditions, namely, the removal of the embargo on god, the free minting of gold at a standard price, and the covertibility of the paper pound.

All the dangers and uncertainties of unstable eurrency will remain if steeling reaches par, unless it is permanently stabilised by being placed on a gold basis.

Mr. Snowden admits there are risks, but is of the opinion that they must be borne for the sake of the besefts which success will bring in the stabilisation of currencies. There is no need to wait for the rectification of the trade balance, he states, since stabio cur- reney is one of the essentials of a healthy state of trade. Mr. Snowden imphasises the Importance of co-operation with the United States and belleves, that England's example will result in a general réturs to the gokl standard-Reuter,

STILL THE SINGAPORE BASE!

Clearly it is a dre: Influence on the peaceful security of the Empire that we should be in a position to guard that shipping. If we de no, our action is not aimed at any other Power, least of all at an old and faithful ally, towards which, to-day, our, goodwill and friendship are as strong as they ever were."-Reuter.
