The fold of drivers and ents was large. The list non- tained the names of many well known American and foreign |speed merchants and specially

uilt racing cars.

When a plan of the course WAR Inid before Chief Engineer Mather of the factory, he inferred that the man who mudo tho drawing could not have known his grade percentages, that the grades couldn't be so steep. Sevaral months later, while in Cali- |fornia. Mr. Mather took' advant- age of an opportunity to inspect the course. Again he claimed that the draftsman could not have judged the grades correally be cause he had hardly done their steepness justies.

The Courso left the oval raco track in B fairly love) 30-font wile strutch until it reached the hills. The first ofị these it climbed on a lang wind- ing 12 per cent, grade Around the horseshoo bond it took astiff 29 por cont, downward drop. Turning several corners past the one-mile point, it rose sharply to the tune of 29 per cent. Rounding a hair pin curve it fell away on a 35 por cent, grado.

Past the two-mile post the drivere had to four-whool brako their cars sharply for another hair pin curvo, turning immediatoly into a 20 por cent. up grade. Wriggling along the crost of a hill they pulled up a 30 per cent. tilt, around a sharp hair pin and down a 30 per cent grado that was equally tough on driver and car. This slackened into a 10 per cont. grado at the three-mile point. Past this point the course roso slightly in an over twisting circuit down the home slratch to the oval track.

Fifty of those "back to nature" laps consituted the 250- mile grind. It WAR on this couran and seninst this com- pebion that a Jowott Spacial, {equipped with one of tho now
