THE OPIUM CONFERENCE.

London, January 29.

Yesterday at Geneva, the day was taken up in informal con- ferences, including several meetings between Lord Robert Cecil and Mr. Porter, at which, it is stated a certain amount of progress was made. Lord Robert Cecil last night telegraphing an apology at inability to attend a banquet in his honour in London, remarkoá” "I see no prospect of ever leaving Geneva,"

The Morning Post Washington correspondent speaks of a fluttering in the Senate irreconcilable dovecote over the report by Mr. Porter that he had agreed to members of the Central Narcotic Control Board being appointed by the Council of the Longue. The irrecon- cilables intimate that they want to ascertain clearly how for the United States is thereby tied up with the League before they give consent. Reuter.

Geneva, January 29. Interviewed by Mr. Kop, a representative of the Anti-Oplum Association of China Lord Robert Cecil outlined the British attitude as voiced of the Opium Conference. He was of the opinion that it was useless attempting to leally forbid. oplum smoking| by persons not at present addicts until the production of raw oplum was effectively controlled. He was also of the opinion that it was impracticable to embody the labours of two conferences in one agreement.-Reuter.

THE PRICE OF BREAD..

London, January 29.

The Food Prices Commission at present dealing with whoat and four holda real public interest owing to successive incrdases in the price of bread, recalling wartime. The loaf in at present teoperce and will shortly be rising to clovenpence in London an Asbilling in the provinces. Wheat growers in the United States, Canada and Australia are reputed to be reaping a golden harvest due to the shortage, which is attributed to reduced production throughout the world, growing preference on the part of Japan and China for wheat instead of rice, and also Russia ontoring the market as a buyer. The situation is reflected in shipping freights, which, yesterday reached fifty shillings a ton for March loading from Australia, justifying British vessels going to Australia in ballast Wheat prices in Liverpool yesterday touched seventy-eight shillings for best Canadian and a further rise, is anticipated.

Chicago, January 29, Immense buying, including European agents, has sent the price to a fraction above two dollars, the highest since the Hutchinson corner in 1898-Reuter.
