London, October 29. The first news of a result recorded a Conservativo gain from a Liberal at Manchester Exchange, which the Liberals last year won from the Conservatives; and also a Conservative gain from Labour at South Salford, whero last year's Labour victory in a throw-cornered contest was converted into a defeat, owing to the Liberal stand- ing down.

Other Conservative gains rapidly followed, Labour losing Wake- flold and Salford West, where the Liberals stood down; and also Salford North, where Mr. Bon Tillett, who last. year defeated the Conservative, Mr. Finburgh, in a straight fight, lost to Mr. Finburgh, in a three-cornered contost with a Liberal.

The Home Secretary, Mr. Henderson, was elected at Burnley in a three-cornered fight, his majority being 4,465 as compared with 7,037 in a straight fight with a Conservative in a by-cloction in February.

The Liberal housing expert, Mr. E. D. Sin on, was defeated at Withington, Manchaster, by the Conservative, Mr. Watts, by a majority of 3,198, in a four-cornored fight,
