Building a Crystal Amplifler.

It is not intended for distance. But it is no way to clear up the noises that come with the use of vacuum tubes. Clarity of tone and volume are the advantages of the crystal amplifier.

But it should be`remombored that nothing more than loud speaker uva on stations within 50 nites or so may be expected with this use of the crystals.

To construct this form of ampli- fer. the following parts nooded:

Two crystals, mauntod Woode metal. D1 and D2.

Two fixed condensors, Ci and 2, onch of .001 capacity.

The entire amplifier can be mounted on a 7-inch by 5-inch panol and a 7-inch by 6inch base.

Special caro should be taken in wiring this circuit. Especially important in --the connection following the first amplifier and the crystal. The wire coming from the secondary, G, of the first transformer, and through the crystal, D1. must go to the see ondary, G, of the second trans- former, or the battery would rain the sensitivity of the first ergatal and the amplifier would not work.

Connactions to the crystal may be reversed in seeking the host

volume.

The best kind of wire for don- necting the parts is the soft drawn copper wire. Bus wire har low surfaco conductivity, and since the least possible losses must be maintained in this hook- up, the round soft copper wire will work host.

To operate. the amplifier, in with A ors kial connection detector, connict the ende mark ed "phones," at the left, to the phono terminals of the detector unit. Then manipulate the first amplifier crystals for greatest volume, with the terminals of the phone receivers across the primary of the first transformer.

When greatest possible volume is heard through this crystal, plug the phones into the jack, or connect then to the phone ter minals if no jouk is used, and manipulate the second crystal for greatest volume.

After a little practice, both "crystals can ho worked together.
