The Daily Telegraph commenting on ovents in Chlua, that if the disputo continues the position of the European Legations In Peking will soon become a matter for daily speculation, which. ought not be tolerated. London, Sept. 22. Discussing rubber restriction, the Times contends that the benefit of the higher price following the Improved statistical post- tion at the present time goca largely to the non-restricting producer, while the restricting companies' costs risu as production decreases. The rise In costs in some cases is appreciably greater than the increase in price obtained while the Dutch Indies and other out- side producers have boun enabled to sell increasing crops at higher The real prices, at the same time effecting reductions in costs. issue between the restrictionists and the anti-restrictionists Is whether the advantage to restricting producers in the long run will be commensurate with the sacrifices made.-Reuter,
Claiming that the rubber export restriction scheme in Malaya and Ceylon has amply justified itself, the financial edition of the Times says that the persistent campaign to wreck the restriction more than mero is beginning to be regarded with something suspicion.
Certain large American consumers are known to be desirous of in rubber production in British acquiring a substantial stako Malaya and Ceylon and elsewhere. They are aware that if rubber can be brought well below a shilling, large areas will inevitably fall into their hands at practically their own price. This can only achieved by wrecking, restriction but there is not a ghost of a chance of this childishly transparent campaign suceeding-Reuter.
LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
Berlin, Sept. 22. Speaking at a party moeting at Radolfzeil, Baden, Chancellor Marx said that it should understood and agreed that Germany, main- taining her honour and recognised as great power, should apply for admission to the League of Nations, which ought to leave her free- dom and be just to her justifiable claims. They ought not to let any opportunity to achieve this end slip. He did not yet knew whether the Cabinet would come to a decision on Tuesday, but he thought that at the present time the factors making for such a course had the upperhand.-Reuter.
