Shanghal, Sept. 10. All observers have been turned back at the approaches of the fighting press along the railway, even the police representatives of the settlement authorities, and at the same time instead of the expected general retreat the sound of artillery is plainly hoard, probably ten miles distant. Ho Fang-lin, Shangha! Dolenco Com- missioner, and Lu Yung-helang's right hand man, and the mander of the frat Chekiang army is quoted as saying that he is determined to maintain the battle lines defending the approaches to the Woosung forts and Lungwha arsenal and is placing absolute reliance on the loyalty of his troops. He annnanced this decision after La Yung-halang had reported that he expressed his willingness to urge a peace parley and seek foreign mediation. An unconfirmed repori sayr that a Kiangau airplane bombed Nanziang this morning without doing damage.

Every foreign defence unit in the French and International! Settlements is on duty to-night expecting the general rout of the Cheklang forces as a result of the reports of the capture of Hwangtu. Foreign and Chinese shops in the western outskirts are closed and shutiered and industries are closed down. The wooden bridges entering the French Settlement have been removed and strong guards have been placed at all concrete structures and other approaches.

The French defense forces have been augmented by arming a hundred and fifty Russlai youths, who have been stalloned at the outer Settlement boundary.

Firing was heard all the afternoon but foreigners are forbidden to approach the battle lines. It has been confirmed that a portlan of the town of Liuho is burning but Chekiung is reported to be still holding this sector.

Continued artillery firing to the west and north of Shanghai this evening is creating graver apprehension in the Chinese and adjacent districts, and increasing the diffeuities of foreign defence to deal with the admission of the growing hordes of refugees.

The latest report is that the Chekiang Une is indented seriously between the railway and Kiating.

Foreign warships have gone to Woosung to watch developments following the report that relays of the Nanking navy are approaching clone and bombarding Litho. There is remarkable display through- out Chinese territory of foreign flags, British American predominat- ing, with a sprinkling of Red Cross on every class of Chinese establishment.

General La Yang-hsiang has announced definitely that he will! hold out on the IIwangtu-Litho line making his headquarters at Lunghua arsenal. Heavy Aghting has been going on the whole day to-day both at Hwangtu and Luho-Reuter.

- Peking, Sept. 10.

A Fengtien aeroplane this morning dropped a bomb between two ships anchored near Chinwangtao breakwater. No damage was done to the ships, which are chartered by the Kallan Mining Admin-) istration.

Military preparations are proceeding rapidly, but it is generally, felt to be doubtful whether Chung Tsu-lin w}{ ̈www remain, th the field-Heuter.
