THE “GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT.”

There are reports circulating to-day that although the Shamoen strike was officially announced to have been settled, fresh trouble has arisen over the question of the police and that the strike has hoon resumed. Prior to rumours to this offect reaching us, we had been supplied with the terms of the settlement, which wore con tained in an official statement issued by the British and French Consuls at Canton. These wore embodied in a "Gentiomon's Agreement between the British and French Municipal Counelle on the ons hand and the Canton Government on the other. The main features of the settlement were as follows ---

1.-The new Polloe Permit Regulations to be withdrawn, and the oid Pass Regulations to be raverted to with certain ̈amoni- ments, including use of yearly passos with one photograph of boaror attached, and temporary passos, available for one night, without photograph.

2.--The Councils to encourage the re-instatement of private employees and payment of wages for the atriko period..

3-Public servants to be re-instated and wages paid for strike poriod, reservation being made in the case of the police on the quastion of disciplinary measures, which shall bo donit with accord- ing to the discretion of the Councils,
