The inventor's life, taking it all in all, is not a happy one, Oc- casionally the fates are kind to him, and be reaps the roward of his gonius before he has grown old and ponniloss; but for more often it is a caso of heart-breaking delays loading only in the end to uttor failuro, and not infrequent- ly to sucido.
In the comparatively raro casos of success the harvest in An abundant one, but the original inventor reaps it only too seldom. There are some olassic instancos of this tragedy,
Thoro ia a devica invented moro than twenty years ago and stil! in daily use all over the world which has brought at least £2,000,000 to the, manufacturera, The actual inventor disposed of it for a ton-pound note, and died in misorable poverty. Another contrivanco used by every woman in tho land has brought the ox- ploitors untold wealth. The man who originated it died in Lam- beth Workhouse..
If the invention is one of na- tional importance and the dig coveror patriotically offers it in tho firet instance to his own country, ho often finds himself confrontod by a stone wall of scepticism, Tho permanent officials of Gov-. ernmont
deparimente, perhaps from a mistaken senso of duty to the Stato, may obill his heart and harass him to despair by their sooming lack of sympathy, and ovon sometimes by their incapaci- ty to appreciate the importance of the proposition submitted to their judgment.
It must In fairness be admitted that State departments are not always so blind or so adamantino. During the war, and in the appor- tionment of awards by the tribuna) of inquiry-established subsequent- 13, some hundrade of thousands of pounds were allocated to various inventors. This, however. was at a period of gravo omer- goney when many reverses had dispelled the too cheerful op- timism of the oarlier stages of the conflict.
Before the struggle was a month old Mr. J. D. Chisholm,' the inventor of seurat wireless, submitted to tho Govern- mont the plans of a man.. loes dirigible, self-controlled by Kyrosоoplo devices, capable of dropping bomba at pre-determined intervals, photographing ita course automatically, and of returning to its baso after its dea ily cargo had boon discharg ed. He offorod to build three such dirigibles at his own expense and present them to the nation, but the offer was declined.
If the device is ono of merely. domestic utility the Inventor's plight, unless he has money bohind him, is almost hopeless. He may tramp London from ond to and bofore he can And a manufacturer
with sufflalent enterprise to markèi his ̃ dis- covery. Wearled to death by constant robuffs, ho la driven to sell for a triño a discovery, which might have brought him a fortuno, The only remedy seems to lle in the creation of a State Bureau of Inventions with an advisory board of scientists and oummer- alál, magnátõs pledged, to inves tigate thoroughly, all inventions submitted to them and to act*? accordinglyai Thia wouldUS PAS give the discover a chance
