SHIPPING DISASTER.
Otaru, July_28_
The North Japan Steamship Company's s.s. Tairei Maru from Otomari to Otaru is reported lost off Cape Notoro on the evening of 27th inst. One hundred and thirty-eight passengers and fifty-four crew were drowned. Eighteen passengers and five of the crew havé landed in lifeboats at Notoro village. The cause of the disaster is variously reported as the vessel having struck the rocks or collided with another vessel-Router.
THE EMPIRE PAGEANT.
London, July 23,
Dronching rain intermingled with an unseasonable snowfall was responsible for the cancellation of to-day's performance of the Empire Pageant. It also slightly interfered with the royal inspec tion of six hundred Boy Scouts from-all-over-the "Empire, who are. attending the Jamboree. Despite the downpour the boys marched whistling to Buckingham Palace. The Inspection was held at the riding school Instond of in the quadrangle. Each defachment grouped under its own flag, which was dipped in salute to the King, who shook hands with the Scout Masters, and delivered a homily to the boys on the soundness of the Scout precepts. The King made a point of stopping and greeting nad talking with a party of Japanese- Scouts who attended na vialtors-Reuter.

Rome, July 28. A fresh ferment is brewing Is Italy in consequence of the drastic enforcement of the regulation conferring upon local profects nomewhat arbitrary powers to suppress newspapers. Many, sup- pressions have been affected all over the country on the charge of violating press decrees. Hostile and even Fascist journals have been seized in Rome, Naples and other large centres. The police yester day seized the whole Milan presa except Mussolini's personal organ, Popola D'Italia, in connection with the publication of references to the Matteotti case, but the Premier later revoked the prefect's decree.--Reuter:--------
