The respective consulsi in Canton have been instructed to do likewise. Hitherto the gall gabella administrators in Kwang- tung, Yunnan and Széchünt have collected the revenues, which fur some years have been appropriated locally, at-Sun Yat-sen has now turned out the salt gabelle staff.

DRAKE'S BOWLS.
Authenticity of Set at Torquay.
Some discussion has arison as to the authenticity of the art of bowls, which is being used at Torquay in the Torbay Pageant. It is claimed that those were the identical bowls with which' Sir Francis Drake was playing on Plymouth Hoo when the Spanish Armada was scan boating up the English Channel.
While the evidenco as, to the origin of the bowls, which aro among the treasures in the local museum, is not as convincing as it might be the faith of the people of Torquay is by no means with out warrant.
The bowls form part of a wou- derful colloation of curios gathered by, the late Dr. Paget Blako, naval officer and antiquary, who b queathed his collention to the town. Thoy wore in the HBOR- alon of the Blako family for a hundred years.
Dr. Paget Blake was a collector and connolesour of sorupulous! honesty and intorrity, and would havo scorned to make a claim for any of his possessions which could not be substantiated.
