NORSE RELICS.
Anglo-Saxon Finds in Norway.
Two interesting archeological discoveries Word made- last autumn on the Buk Islands, situated in the fjord of Bukn, about 20 miles north-west of Stavanger. They provide fresh ovidonco of the intercourso existing between the British Isles and Norway 900 years ago. Through the courtesy of Dr. Jan Peterson,
Director
tho Stavangor Museum, who has subjosted the discoveries to a close and export examination, I havo now been able to obtain the following details, soys an Observer correspondent.
of
The first discovery was made by two labourers at a place known as Joseng Farm, in the West Bukn Island. It consists of about 320 coins. Approximately 160 of those are of Anglo-Saxon origin, and, with one exception, were minted during the reign of Ethelred II, the Unready (A. D. 975-1013). Bix others are some- what
of the crude coples Ethelrod coins, and one belongs to the reign of his fathor, Edgar (A. D. 959-975).
In the lifetime of Ethelrad tho British consts were constantly raided by the Vikings of Norway and. Danmark, to whom the Unready King paid large ran- some, which he raised by means of the Dancgold. in order to deliver his country from the visits. This fa the explanation which history' offers for the largo numbers of Etholrod coins which have boon. found in Norway, Denmark, and even in Sweden, whither they had doubtless found thoir way from one of the first two countries.
One-third of the coins appear to havo boen minted in London, which was oven then the most important trading contre in England. Most of the others came from York, Lincoln, and Canterbury, while the collection as a whole contains coins minted in no fower than 29. different places.
There are also somo Gorman coins, but theso aro of inferior quality, and it has boon difficult to trace their origin,
The second discovery was that of a magnificent golden buckle, about 3in, in diameter, which was › turnod up in the soll on the Nodrobo Farm, on East Bukn Island, at nearly the same time that the Josong coins were found. The buckle is in three sections; the upper surface is of gold, richly ornamented with a design, in filigres of Norwegian work- manship; the rear surfaco: is of bronzo, and the two are bound together with a thin silver wire. Apart from a magnificent golden spur found some years ago on the Christiania Ford, this buckle constitutes the, finest, oxample of goldsmithe" work of the Viking age which Norway posseas06,
There is some ground for be- believing that the design on the rear surface of broško is of Irish ・・・ drigin. In this respect the buckle. forms an interesting addition to: the man objects of Celtiö, origin found in the course of time in the- ancient soil of Bossland
