TREATMENT OF CANCER.

NEW X-RAY TUBE

PERFECTED. ·

An important advance in tho X-ray treatment of certain forms of cancer has been made possiblo by a new typ" of X-ray tube, according to Dr. Francis. O. Wood, Director of the Crooker Instituta! of Cancer Research of Columbia. University, Now-York.

"The now tubo, which way mado by the research engineers | of the Wostinghouse Lamp Com- pany," states Dr. Wood is cap- able of giving out five or six times the amount of X-ray which the ordinary tube does. It will enable apecialists to treat a very nucli Inger number of people and treat them much more effectively than can be done at prosont.

Another advantage of the new tube is its longer life. The present tubos wear out very rapidly, and as they cost over $250 each, the expenso of treatment is neccesari- ly very high. One of the now tubes, howevor, has been in use) in a clinic ovor three months and is still proving ontirely satisfac- ary. This, togother with the fact that it reduces the length of each treatment, naturally reduces the cost of treatment.

I must be understood that in. only certain cases can cancer be permanently cured by X-rays. Surgery still requins our host mother of handling this disenso. We are only beginning our work, howovor, and the groat improve- ments now boing made in: X-ray apparatus warrant hope that greater advances may be expected in the, futuro. Pus- sibly we shall be able to cure more cases, and certainly wo shall make a great many people more comfortable and arrest the growth of the disease for a short er or a longer time."

Dr. C. T. Ulray. Westinghouse resourch engineer, is the inventor of the now X-ray tube.

"Two improvements have been incor- porated in this tube," states Dr Rentschler, director of the West- inghouse research department. "In the first place it has a high emissive power. This can be better understond if we speak in torms of electric lamps. If the older typo of tube word to be compared with a 50-candle, power lamp, the new tube would resem blo a lamp of 250 to 300 candle- power.

"The second feature of this tube is that it is designed for use on very higivoltages. In prac- tice, tubes are kept in service for long periods of time, and their) ability to withstand high voltagos is limited, they are liable to be punctured and thus destroyed. Tho Ulroy tube, however, has a greater factor of safety, and thus should last longer in use.

"Dr. Ulroy is engaged on fur ther investigations which promise ovén moro important results than thoso obtained by his present tubos. He has apparently found a means of increasing the emis- sion of the specific rays that curoj certain forms of cancer and, at the same time, are foss injurious Data How to healthy flesh. available indicate that this latest tubo will still farther cut down! the time needed to troat surface cancers and will also oxlond the use of X-rays to internal cancer: that cannot now be treated in
