EVICTIONS BILL CLAUSE THROWN OUT.

PREMIER SAYS HE WILL NOT RESIGN.

(Reuters Service.)

London, April 7.

In the House of Commons the Government were defeated on the Evictions Bill by 221 to 212.

Mr. Hamsay MacDonald nude it clear that he dues not contem- plate resignation in consequence of this defeat.

Loudlan. April 7, ..

The Evictions Bill was discussed by the Cabinet for three hours 40-day, also by a special meeting of the Liberal party,

The matter croppod up at ipitestion time in the House of Cam- mons, when the Opposition pressed for a pretpottement of the Bilt till statisties of the numbers of evictions be available. Mr. Ranisay MacDonald replied that the urgency of the question precluded any justponement.".

When Mr. Pringle resumed the debate on the serond reading. There was an imprising array of Conservative and Liberal front- beners, while Mr. MacDonald was leading the House instead o

Mr. Clynes

MF. Pringle doelared that the Government's amendment to - Clause One meant nothing. The clause might as welf be withdrawn. It was important to know whether the Boverament mount that the enst of relieving tenants should-fall on the State or on the lovit authorities,

Mr. MacDonald was ovated by the Labourites. He said this emergeant metastere was neissiruted by the alarming increase of evictions in industrial town, Where unemployment was rife. Some were due to an Art passed by the Pets Chavernment. Very unseemly spemes were cerurruing and still more unseonly ones were probabile. It was the Goverüisont's intention that the House shinild shape thel Bill in committee. The Govorniment would gladly co-operate in relieving property owners of the burdent, which the community. should share. He admitted, amid ironiral cheers, that it was a hurried Bill, pressed upon the Government when its hands were uncomfort Ably full.

Mr MacDonald's whole Speech was greated with Opposition laughter and ironical cheers, and interruptions demanding that be should clarify the position as regards the source of relief, to such an extent that the Speaker intervened, saying these were unfair; to the Prime Minister.

Ex-Premier's Advice.

Mr Stanley Baldwin said the Government would be well advised o drop the futile and unhappy elause, until the Government know what it wanted to do.

Mr. Asquith said that for once he assoviated himself with "a stupid party." He had not the most romate ilea of the Governments* propos ds. Ta postpone the incidence of the cost of relief to a vague and remote readjustment of local and imperial burdens was trifling with the House, (Loud Opposition und Liberal cheers),

through, if produced at all.

Above is a sketch of the proposed bridge from Canton to Honam, across the Front Reach, which has been suggested by Major Ct. W. Olivocrona, who is the Engineer-in-Chief of the Board of Conservancy Works of: Kwangtung. Its site is immedi ately above the up-stream end of Dutch Folly Island.

As will be seen, the bridge has three spans, the contre of which is movable. When raised, a space of 147.6 feet between piers would be left unobstructed in the contre span to a hoight of 51 feet above high-water while the two stationary spans would each have an opening of 193.5 fast. When closed. the height of the contre span would be 46 feet above water, that of the shore span being 36.1 feet. The estimated cost of the bridge in H.K. $2,360,000.
