Homeless Dogs Happy in New York.

Paws across the sea is a sentiment that didn't win much favour with the 192 animated mops exhibited last week at the Plaza Hotel by the Pekinese Club of America, says & Writer in the New For World. The small canines that peep out from behind, dense undergrowth are unanimously against any em tangling alliances with foreign dog biscuits. The truth of the matter is that' the Pekinese are worrying the curl out of their tails. They are terribly afraid that somebody is going to find out the real status · of their relations back in China. Here in America, the Peka has pushed his way into society so vigorously that he has flattened his nose in the process.

In the Plaza ballroom the Pekes reposed in glass cases-lined with precious Chinese exam broideries. One of them slept on an orange silk cushion; another lay nose to nose with a gold thread dragon: while a third was housed in miniature. pagoda, with heavy gold fringe strang along the curling eavey. All,

hovered around sealskinned ladies with combs and unguents and a vocabulary of affectionate phrases that would have startled, their husbands into spilling the matitudinal egg.

Meanwhile, in Peking, the third and fourth cousins of these pampered canines were wandering homelessly around the streets, run down at the heel, patched at the elbows, and hungry enough to bite the ankle bracelets from the foot of a bronze idol

Dogs, it happens, are not re- garded as pets in China, With the exception of the court sleeve dogs, they are kicked. scalded, starved and treated in general. like redheaded step-children A Chinese carries his bird cage even into battle with bim, and he chirps affectionately to crickets imprisoned in small wooden cages. but a dog is regarded as a rank patsider.
