HERBAL TREASURES: Value of a Country's Flora. Impressions that have been harboured in the minds of his hearers that botany is a dead science calling only for the col- lection and classification of plants were dispalled by Dr. John M. Coalter in an illuminative address before the Asiatic Society in Tok- yo recently., Dr. Coulter is head of the department of botany in the University of Chicago, and was sent to the Oriant-last aut- umn by a New York educational society to do research work and deliver a series of lectures. After four months in China, where he studied and delivered addresses before student bodies, Dr. Coulter

in to Japan want

com- pany with his wife and daughter to conclude his lecture tour. The address given in Tokyo was his seventeenth in Japan.

In his talk. Dr. Coulter held np the science of botany as a this sational asset. Through science, he said, nations can find new resources, open fabulously valuable mines of raw materini and produce better quality and more quality in their agricultural the While tracing products. advance scientists in America bave made in recent years in botany and illustrating the bene-1 fits that have accrued therefrom, fact that The emphasized the

Oriental countries, especially China, are years behind along this line and present tremendous reservoirs for botanical treasures yet unopened.

There are three main uses, to which the science of botany can be put for developing natural resources of any country" said the scientist. "The first of these is the knowledge revealed in the cultivation of forests. Trees not only produce lumbar, but have a direct bearing on the entire agricultural system. Trees give us what is known as the water) cycle. that is the moisture is absorbed from the ground by the roots of these tree, passed by evaporation into the atmos phere, and returned again in the form of rain. Areus denuded of trees are always unproductive,! because this water cycle has been broken. There is no means for evaporation, and therefore no moisture. In an experiment conducted by my department at the University of Chirago we measured the volume of water poured into the atmosphere by an acre of forest, and found it to total during the foliage season approximately 20,000 gallons.

SEARCH FOR NATIVE PLANTS.

The second main use of the science of botany for exploiting natural resources is in the search for plants valuable for their by- products. Every country should make a more thorough study of its native plants, as it is not gen- erally realized what enormous resources are being neglected in this field. Plants supply gums,
