CAREER

Commander C. T. Beckwith, the retiring Harbour Master, who leaves for England this week by the s.s. Morea, has held office during an extremely interesting bear pariod of the port's history,

to China He first came Navigating Officer on H, M. S. Diadem, under Admiral Sir G. Noel, and on the death of the then Harbour Master, in 1906, his services were lent as Acting Harbour Master to handle the work of reconditioning after the disastrous typhoon of that year

were full of arduous labour and heavy re- sponsibilities for Commander Beckwith, who, in addition to the duties of the Harbour Depart ment, was shouldering the work of Marshall of the Prize Court In this and Coaling Officer. latter capacity he was instru- mental in breaking a Japanese coal ring, thereby affecting a great saving to the Government, He will best be remembered by his work in connection with the purchase, classification and relay- ing of the harbour buoys, a task which has increased the efficiency and reduced the cost of buoyage in the port, until it is now prob. ably the best in the world.
