PIRACY EVIL.

Convoys for Ships.

OVERNMENT'S DECISION.

In view of the great amount public interest taken in the gestion of piracy prevention ry it will be learned with rification that the Government

decided to institute a system Conroys so far as Canton and

West River is concerned. This much was learned by a Telegraph representative jorning.

RESULT OF GUILDS" REPRESENTATIONS,

this

The Government's decision has sen out of strong represents- ons made to it by the China oast Officers' Guild and the Karine Engineers' Guild of China September last and also during de present month, certain sug- estions being made, the adoption which, it was argued, would ad to put down the piracy evil Inong those suggestions was a quest for convoys or naval. strole to afford protection to hipping engaged on the Canton and West River runs.

A letter bas now been dis-

atched from the Government to

he combined Guilds, in which

is stated that His Excellency

he Governor is prepared to in- titute a system of convoys for hips proceeding to Canton and so for ships on the West River

un, the system in the latter casa extending as far as Kongmoon.

LANDING PARTIES.

In an interview with the As-

istant Colonial Secretary this morning. a Telegraph represent- tive asked if the Government

contemplated taking any action

on the lines suggested in the re- Solutions adopted last week at the Chambers' of Commerce.con- ference in Shanghai, namely, the securing of co-operation with the Chinese authority whereby land- ing parties could deal with districts known to barbour pirates. In reply, it was stated that the Government was naturally noti anxious to disclose too much of what it was doing in the way if piracy prevention. It was true that it had decided to establish a system of convogs, bur beyond aying as much it did not wish to say anything further.

CANCER CAMPAIGN.

BRITISH EXPERT'S

RESEARCHES.

MAY LEAD TO PREVENTION.

London, Feb. 15.

The Evening Standard under- stands that an important step forward in the cancer campaign has been made as a result of rasearches by Dr. Louis Sambon of London, who is an expert on tropi cal diseases, Dr. Sambon was cons missioned by the British Empire' Campaign against cancer to visit the Adriatic coast of Italy where disease is in some parts extremely prevalent, Dr. Sambon has been able, it is stated. to throw an entirely new light on the causes of cancer in human beings, and it is thought that his researches may lead to the

prevention

of cancer rather than its cure. The districts in Italy which ha visited offered favourable ground for his work. In one village, for example, he found 300 people suffering from cancer and in another practically every inhabit ant had the disease in one form For another. On the other hand villages not far distant had not known a case of cancer for 20 years. A careful examination of the conditons in infected villages which were absent from those mot infected, is stated to have 21ed to most valuable resulta. It hoped that the doctor's arches may

have turned mour research into the right which, in itself, would be immense step forward.
