THE RAILWAY TROUBLE.

Landen, Jan. 19.

Mr. Bromley has made a statement declaring that he is astounded Mr. Thomas's circular cabled yesterday. The publicity thus given to the disagreement between the railway leaders threatens to nullify the earnest efforts of intermediaries who, under the auspices of the General Council of the Trade Union Congress; conducted negotiations all day in an effort to effect a settlement. These have been adjour- ed.

To-day twenty thousand drivers belonging to the National Urión of Railwaymen remain at work, enabling essential skeleton services to be carried 6. Air transport companies are mobilising every machine and the Ministry of Transport is planning food eonveyance by routh, but the steadiness of prices in the commodity markets. especially coal, bespeak prevailing confidence that the strike will be shortlived-Aeater.

Miss Margaret Böndheld presided at a meeting this morning of the Council of the Trade Union Congress and the three Raliwagę Unions. The fact that the Secretary of the Cornell, Mr. Bromley, arrived late is interpreted optimistically. It is understood he inter- viewed the railway managers with a view to settlement.-Rester. Later.

The crowded industrial conferences ended at 230 in the morn. in when it was announced that the locomotive engineers refased agree to the tentative proposals, which were drawn up as a result of the earlier meeting of the General Coungit of Trade :hns and rallway managers. The possibility still remains of another meeting with the managers today. After a fruitless, meeting of the LecD. motive representatives with the general council pesterday morning, the latter inmediately requested a meeting of managers, and gested à temporary postponement of the award. The meeting ad- journed to-day to enable Labourites to discuss the proposals separate- y, with the aforementioned result.-Bruter.
