Much amusement can be ob- tained from the Chinese hawkers in Hongkong. A Chinaman al- ways tries to sell his goods with a smile on his face, and it would appear to be a matter of supreme indifference to him whether you are a purchaser or not.

When a liner arrives a large number of small boats full of Chinamen selling their wares. shoot into the side. The most common merchandise are сад aries. for which the place is famous, and the air is filled with their song.

The Chinese hawker isdelighted if he should ever get the price he asks. He will do you down without the slightest qualm, and it is no uncommon thing to find after you have bought it that your canary is a sparrow care- fully painted yellow.

They all sing well at the time, but sometimes they are doped. and after a few days their sing. ing diminishes to a few chirrups, On a recent occasion, being short of ready money, and knowing that a Chine man is very fond of clothes. I had the bright idea of uffering some in exchange for birds. I accordingly produced from my cabin an old pair of black trousers that bad gone green in the sun. There was great com- petition amongst the Chinese for these and eventually I collected two nice-looking canaries and a cage. The China man barded these up to me at the end of a long stick, and seemed quite satisfied with his bargain But the Fates were against me. I left my canaries out- side my cabin, and in the morning when I went to feed them they were missing. Someone had stolen them through the port-hole.

Again looked through my Jugxage, and found an old felt bat. This only produced one. cacary and cage, which I brought to Ruy lind.

When I left Hongkong there were 80 canaries in all on the boat amon at Passengers and crew. Very few survived the voyage, and these that did caused trouble with the customs authorities.
