When the old Coastguard force was disbanded and no fewer than 33 Coastguard stations closed øloven months ago, it waa [prophesied that there would be a

considerable revival of smuggling | on the British orasts, and it how seems that the prophecy is com- ing true, says a Home „paper Bigger seizures of spirits and to- bacco have been made by the revenue officer during the past few months than for many years. and still the game goes on, in spite of heavy penalties imposad on smugglers of these cominodities. The mul tiplication of fast motor boats round the coast is said to be one! of the reasons. There are now very long stretches of the coast- line in the care of one or two men, and the people in these quieti places assert that smuggling is being carried on almost openly. It is understood that the question as to the adequary of the present. force of coast-watchers is to be considered. shortly at a depart- | mental conference.

Judgment was given in the Board of Trade inquiry at the Law Courts recently as to the! causes which led to the loss off the steamer Trevessa which sank in the Indian Ocean at midnight on June 4.

The Chairman of the Court (Mr. W. H. Disney) said the Court found that the vessel foundered curing a heavy S.S.W. gale on June 4 through springing a leak, which admitted water rapidly into the ship and filled No. 1 hold. There was no direct, evidence to justify a positive find- ing as to the cause of that leak, but the Court was strongly of fopinion that, owing to the nature of the cargo and the severe weather she experienced. the ship: Was subjected to continuousl excessive straining which caused a stam or seams to open in the shell plating on one ut on both) sides.

The incident serves to recall al similar one at the launching of a ship in New South Wales. The naming ceremony was performed by a lady, at whose left hand stood the Governor. She took the champagne bottle firmly ic, her right hand: swung it with of course, the intention of hitting the bow of the good ship, but her grip was so firm and her swing so awift that she caught the Governor fairly in the middle region and doubled him up!

AN OIL "DISCOVERY

Perth, Nov. 28.-A few weel s ago a mild sensation was causer here by the report of a discovery of mineral oil on the edge of a salt lake 20 miles from Southern i Cross by two prospectors wh showed oil-bearing samples fron bore and small bottles of crude

oil.

A syndicate was formed at Perth, but before the flotation of the company the Governmen: made a trial boring in the vicinity Land an analysis of the prospectors samples, concerning which susp· feion had been aroused. The las authorities made investigations and the police to-day report the discovery in the prospectors camp. ingeniously hidden beneath a bunk, of a dug-out in which was a tank containing 80 gallon of min ›ral oil, six tins of differen oils, and an underground pipe) from the tank to the bore. distance of 16 Warrants have been issued for the prospectors who have disappeared.
