Here is a picture of the new ballroom of the Astor House, Shanghai. The gorgeous peacock rising over the orchestra is made of many thousand leaded pieces of coloured glass. Behind it is a network of coloured lights, which shine through to make wonderful shimmering masses of colour, which move and scintillate with kaleidoscopic richness. In the background may be seen the countless mirrors, from the upper sections of which shine green lights all about the room. The curiously wrought floor, made of precious imported woods, is a triumph of the joiner's art, with its flowing concentric lines and great six-pointed star and circle in the centre.
