CHINESE VILLAGE SWEET AWAY BY FIRE. fOur Own Correspondent)

Singapore, Jan. 11,

A whole Chiese village of over three hundred buts was burnt out yesterday. The Bre was caused by kha burning of - joas paper and a strong breeze spread the flames rapidly. The inmates were terror- stricken and nearby people had diffenly in getting them to safety. Several of the occupants of the village were burned to death. Fivel fire engines attended with the latest fire appliances and worked persistently to confine the blaze, which continued, from eleven till late in the alternoon. After the tire the scene was one of devasta. tion: only charred bodies, including hundreds of chickens, cats and doga. with tree stumps and other debris, were lett. Numbers of children were rescued by the heroism of nearby residents The situation of the village being almost in the centre of the island, the dames attracted the whole population.
