ORIGIN OF PETROLEUM.

Some Conflicting Theories

Petroleum has been, known and goveted since the time of Herodo šus, who described, the of pits near Babylon, and in the last half-century its importance to mankind has swayed open and secret diplomacy. Probably, no (other natural product has been studied more diligently or has called into existence à more expert army of enginears, them- ists, and geologists, says the Times scientific correspondent. It is being sought in every country, in barren uplands and in tropical forests: its distribution in geolo- gical formations is known with (remarkable accuracy: the chem- ical and physical properties of all the forms in which it occurs have been investigated with a ininute] thoroughness. And yet there is still difference of opinion as to how it came into existence, or even as to whether it is of animal, of vegetable, or of mineral origin. Dr. E E Spielmann, in a recent little volume ("The Genesis of Petroleum": Bann) cites fewer than 100 papers op origin. printed in scientific journ- als between 1912 and 1922, and Fet hesitates from giving & decisive verdict.

An increasing majority of those who have studied the chemistry of petroleum and the natural con- ditions under which it occurs have formed the opinion that it is of organic origin. At first such views tended to the belief that it

But there is not enough evidence of the existence of high tempera- tures such as might be the result of volcanic action in a majority of the natural sources of petro- leum, and, on the other hand, there is little evidence as to the Straits, Egypt & Europe via Marseillas equivalence of high temperatures acting for a few hours in the laboratory and low temperatures i acting through geological ages.

So long ago as 1794 Haquet wrote that the greater part if not the whole of the oil in the Gali- cian fields had come from the decomposition of marine animals. Actually in the laboratory liquids resembling petroleum have been obtained by the distillation of menhaden (fish) oil. Arthe pre-: sent time conditions have been observed which suggest that petroleum is still being formed by decomposition. On the Sardinian Japa
