GREAT MINE EXPLOSION!

HUNDREDS LOST!

Joan Lowrie, Heroine, Saves Lover!

An

Hundreds of lives are lost in one of the most catastrophic accidents in all mining history! A terrific explosion of gas, followed by the col- lapse of passage-ways trapped scores. underground stream flooding the lower levels of the mine hindered the work of rescue and in many instances made it impossible. Other parts • of the mine became a veritable Hades of flame following the explosions.

Hundreds were still trapped below and among them Fergus Derrick, the mine foreman, when Joan Lowire rushed through the crowd of fran- tic relatives at the mine entrance... As she heard this her heart sank. The only man she loved, the only man who had ever been kind and honest with her! Throwing off restraining clutches she clambered down the flaming shaft. Her path weirdly lighted by the vicious flames, hope was her only guide. A rush of the rising water swept her along with the debris. Into the flood from a piece of shoring, the unconscious form of Derrick slipped with a splash. Just in time Joan saw and reached him. Struggling frantically she guided the still form to that part of the mine where help finally reached them. What heroism, what courage, what love! To Joan Lowrie, Fergus Derrick owes his life.

Complete details are now on display at this theatre where Priscilla Dean is Joan Lowrie in the great Universal-Jewel production, "The Flame of Life," from one of Frances Hodgson Burnett's best novels, directed by Hobart Henley who made "The Flirt."
