BABIES GROWN TO ORDER.

Startling Phophery of Scientist.

Mr. J. B. S. Haldaño, a brilliant young scientist and nephew of Viscount Haldane, predicts that in two hundred years babies will be "born" to order is the laboratory of the biologist,

The startling prophecy is made in an article entitled "If you were alive in 212 A. D. contributed to the Century Marche. It is t written in the form of a myth in order to break the revelations i gently.

оп

M. Haliane describes hist

"an article a

the essay influence of biology on history during the twentieth century. which will it is hoped, be read by a rather stupid under- graduate of Cambridge Uni- versity to his supervisor during) his first term two hundred years hence."

The rather stupid" essayist,| after, describing the abolition of disease all over the world after 1938. tells the history of the pro- duction in 1951 of the first "ectogenetic" child.

It was produced from an embryo grown for nine months in the laboratory and then brought out into the open air. The process is briefly sketched, and the essay continues

"The news caused an unpre- cedented wensation throughout the world, for the birth-rate was already less than the death-rate in most civilised countries. France was the first country to adopt ectogenesis, officially, and by 1968. was producing 60,000 children annually by this method.

As we know, ectogenesis is now universal, and in this.country less than 30 per cent, of childred are now born of woman."*

CHARACTER.

After the student of the future has brought his essay to an end. Mr. Haldane writes:-

"In the future perhaps it may he possible by selective breeding to change character as well as institutions.

Mr. Haldane declares that every

one of

the practical advances which be predicis, Fuch as the laboratory process of pro- ducing children, is already fore- shadowed by recent scientific work.

He prophesies also that in 120 years' time our foodstuffs will be directly built up from sources as coal and atmospheric, nitrogen, and that in 100 years our mechan- ical power will be entirely derived from the wind. England being covered for this purpose with rows of metallic wind mills work- ing electric motors, which will supply current to great electric! maina.

Mr. Haldane, who is the son of Professor Haldade intends" to elaborate these and many other romantic pictures of life in the world of the fatüre in a book to be published shortly.
