LONELY MEN:

A Type of Our Times: ?

A friend has just said of the Iste Lord Morley, that he WAS A lonely man. John Morley him self, in his great biographical work, declares that William Bwart Gladstone was "at heart a solitary man. Indeed, the gener atity of notable men have been marked by this characteristic. writes a contributor to a London |journal. -

For the secret of conspicuous action is, a preparation to be matured only in loneliness. Even when a course of conduct is concerted and arranged with others, the determination and power to accomplish spring from the enargies accumulated in secret.

Loneliness is essential to strength of purpose, in whatever direction it is employed. One of the best known quotations from Ralph Waldo Emerson presents. this truth in striking words. “I is easy in the world to live after the opinion of the world. It is easy in solitude to live after our own. But the great man is he who, in the midst of the world keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."

Lord Morley, like his friend and leader, Gladstone, spent his lone-t liness in steeling his mind unit - heart to honest purpose in thứng world of men.

MOODS WE GET.

But lonely men are not resi tricted, as Morley himself would have said, to the shining ranks of mankind. In a sense, every man is at heart a lonely man, för there are moments in life wher we all stand solitary and cannot escape our fate. But most of us manage to share whatever comes with others, in office, shop, and, club. Our solitary life is a more fragment of existence and easily borne.

But the loneliness of some mea

in inconspicuous station is a marked feature of our day. You watch them passing through life, withdrawn from the little intimacies of their fellows and standing apart from any association with others. They appear in the office and shop, with the barest acknowledgment of the presence of fellow-workers, and go through the day's toit silent and aloof. In the meat bour they draw away aloïe, to return for the second half of the day, only to disappear out of sight and knowledge until the necessities of livelihood bring them on the mOITÓW,

Others enter into the comman tasks and pleasures of comrades, but never fail to indicate a relish of being alone. They are cheery fellows as they share the exper- iences of others, but one always feels that they appraise the gifts of solitude above the joys of comradeship.

We cannot interfere with the lonely men, nor should we seek to do so. Perhaps they know better than we do the truth of the Prophet Isaiah's words: "In quietness shall be your strength."
