Landen, Nov. &

Sir John Jordan, In a speech at the China Asscelation dinner in London, referring to the efforts to develop inter-Imperial trade, de- clared that rude patside the Empire was equally important. He raid that China's foreign trade was nearly £300,000,000, and that China was the largest undeveloped market in the world to-day. British trade with China was ansatisfactory, he added, giving as an example the fact that the expert of cotton goods to China during the eighth of the ârst half year to 1921 amounted only to abeat ene export to India as compared with about the quarter normally. At that he rate he said, the trade would on employ afty thousand men instead of a handred thousand. The organization in China not only caused a decrease in trade but the very foundations of British trade in China were being undermined by gew insidious assaults from without. Soviet envoys in Peking were preaching to applauding 87- dlenses of Chinese statesmen, dobtrines which brought Russia to her present state, and seed was being sown in receptive soil for a harvest of similar upheavals in China. Incessant vigilance was necessary, be continued, to maintain the British position in China. in the pre- Beat dissolving conditions throughout the whole eastern world.

At the Econimis Conference Sir Lloyd Gresme announced that the British Government had decided to recommend Parliament to make further preferences to the Dominions, including an increase to one fourth in the case of tobacct, the imposition of an import duty of ten shillings per hundred weight on foreign canned salmon, whereas the Empire products were free.

In addition to the preferences mentioned yesterday the con ference was unanimously of the opinion that the three methods. namely subsidies, the grant of import licenses, and the stabilization of prices were impracticable, but that the closest co-operation of various Governments and producers' organizations was desirable in order to improve the marketing of agricultural products. The question of the export of French wines to China was raised by Senator De Monzie who asked the Minister of Commerce whether steps had been officially taken to ensure that the Chinese market would remain effectirely open to Minister replied that he was constantly in communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French Commercial At- fache in China for the purpose of safeguarding the interests of French wine exporters, and was seeking a means for the develop ment of such exports. BAVARIAN PUTSCH FAILS TO MATERIALISE.

Berlin, Nov, B.

Fading the materialisation of the hitherto threatened Bavarian putsch, the Government's principal pre-occupation remain the problem to ameliorate the chaotic francial situation and the hourly rising prices, which are exemplified in the case of bread. A single Ioaf to-day costs more than the average wages of a worker last week. The Government has decided to repeat the levy on foreize securities and to raise the embargo on sugar export. It is announced that the mark will disappear on the 15th when the new Rentenmark apyears.
