On the occasion of King Ed ward's death he had, with many other journalists, spent the day At 8 at Buckingham Palace. p.m. Lord Knollys said the King was expected to pass a good night.

With the good news I want back to the office (the Daily Chrơ- nicle) and prepared to go home, but the news editor said, as news editors do. "Sorry, but you'll bava to spend the night at the Palace in case of anything happening. Gibbs protasied, but went a reporters do. By favour of the police his bright idea of getting a four-wheeler and sleeping in it in the Palace Yard was carried into practice. While his colleague slept.

"I paced the courtyard, stook- ing the last cigarette, and watch- ing the strange scene outside. Suddenly a Royal carriage came very quietly from the inner court- Fard and passed me where 1 stood. The lights from a high the lamp-post flashed inside carriage, and saw the faces of those who had been the Prince of Wales and Princess Mary. They were dead white, and their eyes were wet and shining. I spoke to one of the Kings' gentlemen. How is the King?" I asked. "Sir." he said in a broken voice, King Edward died two minutes ago."

Sir Philip at once telephoned the news to the Daily Chronicle office. The official bulletin was not posted antil an hour later, but when I went home that night I held a copy of my paper, which had caught the country editions. with the Life and Death of King Edward VII."

Though Sir Philip has told else- where his experiences in the war ---whither, it is interesting to learn, he went first as an artist!--- there are many paxes of new stories.

One deals with the British cool- ness of the King and Prince of Wales at one exciting moment in France.

He gives another and peace- time story of the King at the opening of a Shepherd's Bush ex- hibition on a filthy day, when the grounds were like the bogs., of Flanders.
