EFFECT OF MELBOURNE POLICE STRIKE
Melbourne, November 4.
A strike by 650 members of the Police, in consequence of a refusal by the Commissioner to remove supervisors who are accused | of spying methods, led to serious rioting. Trains were overturned | and shop-windows smashed. Many shops were looted. The damage] is estimated at over fifty thousand sterling. Hitherto there bave been two deaths. Fifty-fire arrests have been effected by loyal special police and bluejackets and some of the striking constables, who dispersed the crowds with batons, many rioters being injured. The Cabinet has appealed to all fit men of military age to enrol as special constables. It is reported that a mounted police force con- sisting of volunteers from the Australian Light Horse is being formed.
