MOLERN DRESS

PRETTIEST..

Nature (Slightly) Adorned.

Are the modern woman's frocką: really more beautiful than those of her mother and grandmother, or do they only appear so because we are accustomed to them?

The question was raised by a currespondent, who described how, upon looking through an album of family photographs, he was appalled by the ugliness of women's clothes thirty, twenty, even as lato as thirteen years ago.

Mr. A K Macdonald, the famous black and white artist, gave it as his opinion to a" Daily Chronicle representativo recently, that modern frocks not only seem better but are better.

"Present-day frocks," he add- ed, "are miles ahead of anything that women have worn since the days of the crinoline.

"The crinoline was beautiful because of its fino decorative efect. It entirely concealed the - lines of a woman's figure, but, OX the other hand. it gave to s woman a flower-like appearence, because of its wide unbroken- | curves.

"Since the crinoline, however, until recently, feminine fashions have been simply hideous.. To- day they are more beautiful, not just because they are different, but because they go upon better lines altogether.

"Dresses to-day emphasise the natural lines of the figure; they neither disguise nor distort them.

We are getting back, in fact, to the Greek ideal in women's attire. Modern women's clothes, at their best, are Greek in their purity of line and lack of useless and ex- (tranzus ornamentation.

"Simplicity is always beautiful. We have not reached perfection yet, but we are getting on to wards it.

NO MORE WAIP WAISTS. "Personally. I don't think that women will ever go back to the hideous old fashions of tiny- waisted dresses, high whalebon- ed collars, and so forth. I'believe they have grown to realise that their natural lines are beautiful in themselves, and do not need to be either over-emphasised or disguised."

A well known West-end dross. designer took the same view,

"I don't see," she said. "how. the fashions of to-day can ever look urly. I should make an ex- ception, however, in the case of the long waist, which is unna- rural, and gives a woman the ap-. pearance of having an extraor dinarily long body and very short legs.

"Apart from this. I think that gowns to-day are beautiful be- cause they are natural So many women of the present, too, BIS uncorseted, and this adds to the grace of the figure.

"Then, again, bair is dressed to follow the lines of the head, and hats are made to fit upon the Twenty years head properly. ago bats were put upon the head at-all sorts of absard angles; in fact, in many cases they did not seem to belong to the head at all

The tendency is certainly for fabions to become even -- more simple and tasteful. Skirts, for instance, are much prettier now that they are longer."
