A slow, dragging fox-trot with the melody well broken up and a jerky rhythm creeping through, a couple dancing to it with long. loping graceful strides that suds denly pause for the execution of tricky standstill" steps-that is a perfect Blues dance that I saw sume months ago in New York, writes a contributor to a London journal.

I have seen it here, too people have been dancing to, Blues music for the last year or so without knowing it. It has been taken as just a different method of playing a fox-trot and that indeed is roughly what it is,

Blues music is about a quarter slower than ordinary fux-trot musie. Instead of having a con tinuo flowing melady running) through it. it is deliberately slurred, rúdled up not noisy, like the old jazz, but erratic, quaint, jerky.

And the dance manner that it! persuades, by its tempe and rhy thm. is a languorous, swaying one, with plenty of standstill" steps, heel-und-toe tape" and those hesitating side walks that the Americans excel in and which are a nudification of the wriggly side-walks of the shimmying! Southern negroes : all of which is a reaction from the smoothly correct, almost supercilious dance style in vogue in the fashionable ballrooms today.

Opinions differ as to the ex- cellence or other-wise of Blues music for there is no fixed Blues dance.

MERELY A REVIVAL?
