WIRELESS IN MOTOR-

CAR

Cuncet Beard While Travelling

Demonstrations of the adapta→ tion of tha motorear to the recep¬". tion of wireless broadcasting were gived last month in Windsor Great Park. The tests included. both large-powered and small- powered cars. In the one case the occupants of a 30 h.p. Daimler, travelling at normal speed. listened to the London programme with perfect freedom, and in the other the occupants of a small B.S.A. car drew up at the side of the road, cast one end of an aerial over the bough of an oak tree, and sat down to enjoy the programme on a loud-speaker. The amplified notes carried far over the park. and a herd of deer, grazing some distance off, raised their heads in curiosity at this strange interrup-

• tion of the normal pesceful scane." The experiments were in every way successful. No distortion of lany kind was apparent in the case of the reception on the runn- ing car, and this in itself repras ented an engineering triumph of noslight importance. In the first attempts to receive broadcasting on running motor-cars the experi- menters found reception hopeless-. sly distorted by the sparks from their own magneto and from those of passing cars, but now the Daimler Company, acting in cooperation with the Marconi Company, have successfully "earthed" the magneto sparks and preserved the broadcasting waves unbroken. Furthermore by the substitution of “lorgnette" head phones, they have" settled a considerable difficulty where women's millinery and masculine comfort are concerned. Lis- teaers now raise the lorgnette phones to their eary, as they would a telephone receiver.

HOW IT IS STORED. From the layman's point of view, the most surprising-thing is. the manner in which the appar- atus is stored. The switchboard is neatly arranged at the side. and that is practically the only evidence of the presence of any- thing out of the ordinary. The aerial is invisible. It is merely a thin, flat piece of copper, placed inside the roof, which does not interfere at all with the opening or closing of the car.

It has been decided that the cost of equipping a small open car with a wireless set for listen- ing in while the car is in motion "would be

greater than the owner of the aver- age small car would be pre- pared to face. Accordingly, the B.S.A. has been fittal with a "I portable aerial, an amplifier, and ja loud-speaker. The amplifier and the receiver are mounted on the running board, and they are so designed that they may be transferred at will into the owner's hous and used on the ordinary standard type of aerial. By a clever device the current necess- ary for the lighting of the fila- ments in the valves is taken direct from the accumulator of the car. The loud-speaker also is so arranged that, without inter- fering with the receiver and ame plifier on the running board. it ean be used for the purposes of an indoor entertainment.
